What is the difference between Ferrari and Lamborghini? For starters, these two competing manufacturers are different, separate companies While they have somewhat similar histories and their products are well-match competitors, there are differences beyond being separate companies. When we compare Ferraris, it’s to each other, to help drivers decide where to begin their journey at their Chicago Ferrari dealer. Some drivers would compare a Ferrari to another vehicle as if the victor were not already a foregone conclusion, though. So we want to put one of these comparisons to rest: Ferrari vs. Lamborghini.

Legacy: Ferrari vs. Lamborghini

Founded in 1939 as a subset of Alfa Romeo’s race division, Ferrari is an Italian luxury sports car manufacturer based in Maranello, Italy. Enzo Ferrari soon broke from Alfa Romeo and produced the first Ferrari in the Maranello factory in 1947.

Founded in 1963, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is an Italian manufacturer of luxury cars and SUVs. Ferruccio Lamborghini was originally a tractor designer who saw the then-current Ferrari 250 GT and believed he could compete with the established automaker. Not only did this start the rivalry between the two companies, it’s said that Lamborghini told Ferrari that he could make a better clutch based on his tractor design. Ferrari told him to stick to tractor-making. Perhaps he under-estimated Ferruccio’s engineering skills.

While Ferrari maintained its popularity over the decades, Lamborghini ebbed and flowed with the automaker’s presence in pop culture, with a popularity driven largely by movies like Cannonball Run. Today, in terms of revenue Ferrari is the bigger company, Ferrari is also ahead of Lamborghini when it comes to innovation, as they work to release the first all-electric Ferrari by 2025.

Style: Ferrari vs. Lamborghini

Although vehicles from both Lamborghini and Ferrari are known for their exotic image, their unique aesthetics establish the Ferrari and Lamborghini vehicles about as similar as night and day.

Ferrari styling is defined by elegant, sweeping designs that camouflage aerodynamics to achieve minimal drag and maximum performance without surrendering the class that has carried each Ferrari to leave the Maranello assembly line.

A Lamborghini will, now and forever, be defined by it sharp edges, its incredibly low profile, and the prominent active aerodynamics — including wings.

When it comes to style, the Ferrari is graceful while the Lamborghini is forceful. And yet the Ferrari leads on pure performance specs

Performance: Ferrari vs. Lamborghini

While we must admit that a Lamborghini V12 is certainly more powerful than the average automobile, it falters when placed side-by-side with a hand-assembled Ferrari engine. The current Lamborghini lineup features 3 engines: a V8 twin turbo and two naturally aspirated engines: a V10 and a V12. Their 6.5L V12 produces 759 hp.

The Ferrari lineup is divided by its engines, with both V8 and V12 options. The Ferrari 812 Superfast earns its name, carrying the most powerful naturally aspirated engine of all time: a 789-hp 6.5L V12.

The unique hybrid elements of the LaFerrari give it 949 hp, 644 lb-ft of torque, and a 0-60 mph time of just 2.4 seconds. For comparison, the Lamborghini Aventador’s 6.5L V12 maxes out at 729 hp and 507 lb-ft of torque, with a 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds.

What’s More Expensive: Ferrari vs. Lamborghini

If you’re shopping for a Ferrari or Lamborghini, chances are you’re not pinching pennies. Instead, you’re looking for the best return on your automotive investment. Like any car brand, the price will depend on which model and features you select. Generally speaking, a Ferrari is usually more affordable than a Lamborghini. Also, Ferrari models tend to become collector’s items, making them a better investment in the long term.

Is Lamborghini Faster Than Ferrari?

As you can see above, the LaFerrari bests the Aventador 0-60 mph time by half a second. While you could pick and choose models — a newer Lamborghini might be faster than a Ferrari from years past — when we put the models on equal footing, the answer is clear: no, Lamborghini is not faster than Ferrari.

Founded by a racer and known for creating some of the fastest automobiles in the world, it should come as little surprise for Ferrari to cross the finish line first.
