What’s Fact and What’s Fiction in the Ferrari Movie?

Ferrari is the second film about the Ferrari company to be released in recent memory: Ford vs. Ferrari was released five years earlier. How accurate is this new Ferrari movie? Shot on location in Italy and featuring reproductions of Ferrari’s classic racing cars, veteran filmmaker Michael Mann’s direction conveys a sense of verisimilitude. As Enzo Ferrari in the movie, Adam Driver masterfully captures the spirit and determination of Ferrari himself.

Yet it’s true that the film does take certain liberties. Let’s take a look at what’s fact and fiction in the Ferrari movie:

Fact or Fiction?: Enzo Ferrari Spoke English

Fiction: While Adam Driver’s portrayal of Enzo Ferrari in the movie used entirely English dialogue, Ferrari did not know how to speak the language. In real life, he was only known to speak Italian and some French.

Fact or Fiction?: Ferrari’s Driver Piero Taruffi Won the 1957 Mille Miglia Race

Fact: Piero Taruffi, who had come out of retirement to race for Ferrari Mille Miglia, did in fact win the race. He drove a 4.2L Ferrari at approximately 95 mph, with other Ferrari drivers Count Wolfgang von Trips and Oliver Gendebien behind him.

Fact or Fiction?: The Ferrari Car Company Was in Financial Turmoil in 1957

Fiction: Much of the film’s drama is centered around the pressure for Ferrari to win the Mille Miglia – or face losing the Ferrari business altogether. In reality, the late 1950s marked the first time the Ferrari company broke sales of over 100 cars and was otherwise one of the most successful periods for him and the company.
