Traditionally, a wedding dress is white, a tuxedo is black, and a Ferrari is red, but tradition isn’t for everyone. Modern drivers have an incredible number of interior and exterior color options when buying a Ferrari. Was the First Ferrari Red?

Red Ferraris are iconic in part because the very first Ferrari to leave the factory in Maranello was red. While we have to admit that there’s something truly striking about that shade of Ferrari Red (Rosso Corsa), there’s a simple reason why the earliest Ferraris were red: the International Automobile Federation required all Italian grand prix race cars to be red in the early days of auto racing. If Ferrari were racing under a French flag, we might think Ferraris are stunning in blue. But the initial grand prix Ferraris were red, which carried over to the production models. And the rest is history.

Does My Ferrari Need to Be Red?

When you build out your new Ferrari, every choice is up to you, even the color. While Ferraris are traditionally red — and they look good in red — there is no requirement that your first Ferrari be red. That said, if you’re looking for an older Ferrari around Chicago, the odds are that you’ll find it in red: more than 85% of all Ferraris that were produced before the turn of the century were red.
